VICTORIAN CORSET When the fashionably exaggerated shoulders disappeared, the waistline itself had to be tightly cinched in order to achieve the same narrowed waist effect that wide shouldered clothing had previously done. It is in the 1800s that tightlacing is first recorded. It was ordinary fashion taken to the extreme. The Victorian Corset and also the Edwardian Corset differed from the earlier stays in numerous ways. These corsets no longer ended on the hips, instead they flared out and ended several more inches below the waistline. The corset was exaggeratedly curvaceous, rather than the previously funnel-shaped corsets, and Spiral steel stays curved beautifully with the figure. EDWARDIAN CORSET The Edwardian straight-front corset, also known as the swan-bill corset, or the S-bend corset, was worn during the early 1900s. Its name is derived from the very rigid and straight busk that is inserted in the front centre of the corset. This corset would forced the torso forward and make the hips protrude. The Edwardian straight-front corset was popularised by Inez Gaches-Sarraute, a corsetiere with a degree in medicine, and was intended to be less injurious to it's wearers health than other corsets, in that it exerted less pressure on the wearers stomach. However, any benefits to the stomach area were more than counterbalanced by the unnatural posture that it forced upon its wearer.
