Petticoats Petticoats have been worn throughout history by women who wanted to have the currently fashionable shape created by their clothing. The petticoat, if sufficiently full or stiff, would hold the overskirt or dress out in a pleasingly domed shape and would give the wearer the impression of having a smaller waist than the wearer actually had. It would also complement the desired large bust. Layered Victorian petticoats were not worn to hide the legs, they actually enhanced the stylish figure in the centuries before female attractiveness was defined. Petticoats were revived by Christian Dior in his full-skirted New Look of 1947 the tiered, ruffled, stiffened petticoats remained extremely popular during the 1950s, especially with teenage girls. By the middle of the 20th century, the full petticoat was somewhat rare, having been replaced by simple, ungathered underskirts, waist slips or half slips. Ruffled white or unbleached cotton petticoats were a brief fashion under Prairie skirts in the 1970s, and remain a garment of Western wear. Short, full petticoats in the 1950s style are also commonly worn by squaredancers. Camisoles A camisole can be worn over a brassiere or without one. Some camisoles come with a built-in underwire bra which eliminates the need for a bra among those who prefer one. In modern times, the camisole has been transformed from simply being an undergarment to outerwear, with the fabric changing more into cotton based materials. Some wearers shy away from the outerwear camisole because they fear their bra straps will be exposed.
